On Saturday, Mia's family took a trip to visit her grandma. Grandma lived on a quiet street in a small town. Her house was grand and old. It had a red front door.
Mia's parent, her mom, packed snacks before they left home.
"Close your eyes," Mia's mom said in the car. "Picture Grandma's garden. Can you remember her flowers?"
Mia closed her eyes. She could almost see the gentle old dog by the front gate, and smell the fresh bread from the kitchen window.
When they arrived, Grandma opened the door. "Welcome, dear family!" she said. Her kitchen smelled of something delicious.
"We're cooking dinner together tonight," Grandma said. "I need your help to make a choice. Chicken or fish? It's more convenient if we decide now. Then I can go buy the food."
"Chicken!" Mia said. She loved watching Grandma cook in the kitchen.
Mia's baby cousin sat nearby, playing with a small toy. He liked to jump up and down whenever he heard music playing.
"He's a happy baby," Grandma said. "He drinks his milk and never says a bad word about it!"
At dinner, more people came to the front door. A tall, handsome man walked in. "This is your Uncle Tom," Mia's dad said. "He got married last month!"
"Congratulations!" everyone said. Uncle Tom smiled. "Let's celebrate with a big family dinner every year," he said. "I'll even attend next year's party a day early. I can help cook."
Grandma's neighbor from across the street stopped by too. "I saw the light in your kitchen," she said. "I hope it's a good time. I brought some fresh fruit for dessert!"
"Come in! You're always invited," Grandma said. "We have plenty for everyone to eat."
The table was full of food. There was warm bread, sweet tea with sugar, and a cup of water for each person. There was even breakfast food, because Grandma said pancakes are nice any time of day. Mia thought the pie was the most delicious thing she had eaten in a long time.
After dinner, Mia's clever little cousin asked, "Can we play a game?" The grown-ups agreed. Mia was the oldest cousin at the table. She felt responsible for the little ones. So she offered to play with him for a while.
Later that night, Mia called her friend Zoe on the phone. "I had a wonderful weekend at Grandma's house," Mia said. "Her address is 12 Maple Street. I want to visit again next week."
"That sounds cool," Zoe said. "You always say the nicest things about your family. Next time, invite me too!"
Mia smiled. Grandma's house was the most popular place in the whole family, and now Mia knew why.
