Ben lived on a quiet street with his dog, Rex. Rex was a gentle animal and Ben's best friend. Every day after school, Ben and Rex walked down the same path to the park. Every afternoon, Ben also helped his mom bring in the mail.
One afternoon, Ben opened the gate to let Rex into the yard. He went inside to get a snack. When he came back outside, the gate was open, and Rex was lost.
“Rex!” Ben called. He looked around the yard. He looked by the trees. Rex was nowhere.
Ben felt worried. He ran to tell his mom. “I lost Rex!” he said. “I can't find him anywhere!”
His mom stayed calm. “Let's search the neighborhood,” she said. “He's probably close by.”
They walked down the road and checked near the forest at the edge of town. No dog. They asked a neighbor, but she seemed confused and said she hadn't seen him.
“This is a real mystery,” Ben said sadly. “Where could he be?”
When they got home, Ben discovered something strange. There was a letter in the mailbox. It didn't have a stamp. Someone must have walked up and put it there by hand.
Ben's heart jumped. He opened the letter. Inside was a short message:
“Don't worry. Your dog followed a puppy into my yard. He is safe. Come to the blue house on Elm Street.”
Ben was surprised. Who sent this? It felt like a secret hiding somewhere in the story, waiting to be found.
“Let's go!” Ben said, and he and his mom hurried down the road.
At the blue house, an old man opened the door. He seemed friendly, not strange at all. “Are you looking for a dog?” he asked. “Come see.”
In the yard, Rex was playing with a small puppy. Rex looked happy, not scared.
“My puppy got out this morning,” the man explained. “Your dog followed her through a gap in my fence. I didn't know whose dog he was, so I looked at his collar and found your name. I wrote you a message and left it in your mailbox.”
Ben felt relieved. The mystery had a simple answer after all. “Thank you so much!” he said. He gave Rex a big hug.
On the walk home, Ben thought about the whole event. First, Rex was lost. Then they searched everywhere. Then the strange letter appeared. Finally, they discovered the answer.
“I want to remember this day,” Ben said. He decided to describe the story, just like the stories in his favorite books — with a character, an exciting part, and a problem that finally gets solved.
That night, Ben imagined how he would tell it: A character. A quiet street. A lost pet. A secret message. And a happy ending.
