Ivy wanted this camping vacation to be perfect.
Her family planned to drive to a quiet spot near the hills.
There, they could swim, fish, and sing by a small fire.
Ivy's favorite hobby was collecting old items.
This time, she wanted to bring her grandmother's old ring.
It was not new, but she loved it.
She tucked it deep inside her bag to keep it safe.
When the family arrived, the sky was bright and sunny.
Everyone was thirsty after the long drive.
Ben helped hang the tent between two trees near a bridge.
He tied the rope tight so it would not shake in the wind.
Their friend Cole carried a flag to mark the spot.
By noon, the sun felt warm.
That afternoon, they had a picnic near the water.
Ivy put on her favorite cap.
After lunch, everyone took a quick bath in the stream.
They used soap and a towel to get clean.
Cole took a photograph of the three friends laughing by the water.
Ivy liked to count the fish jumping nearby, and counted seven before dinner.
But that evening, dark clouds rolled in.
The sky grew cloudy and windy, and rain began to fall.
Everyone rushed to keep their things dry inside the tent.
In the rush, Ivy asked Cole to hold her bag for a moment.
That is when the ring rolled out into the wet grass, and nobody noticed.
By the time the rain stopped, it was already dark outside.
The next morning, Ivy reached into her bag, but the ring was gone.
She began to cry.
Ben remembered that Cole had been holding the bag the night before.
So he asked, "Did you take it?" Cole looked hurt.
"I never touched it," he said, but Ben was not sure he believed him.
A cold difference grew between the two friends, and nobody wanted to talk about it.
Ivy did not want to give up.
She wanted to try one more search.
The three of them searched every spot near the tent and the hill nearby.
They looked under the wet grass and inside every bag.
They even checked the old fish basket, but they could not find the ring.
Then Ben remembered something.
The night before, right after the rain, he had seen a bright flash of light.
It was near a tree by the bridge.
Maybe it was just luck, but he decided to look again.
Under the tree, he found the ring at last.
Ben ran back to return the ring to Ivy.
"I'm sorry I doubted you," he said to Cole.
"It's not true that you took it.
The fact is, it just fell out of the bag in the rain." Cole nodded.
"I understand why you were upset," he said.
"But next time, let's agree to talk first, before we blame anyone." Ben decided to explain the whole story again, so everyone understood.
After that, the three friends made peace.
Ivy wanted to learn from what happened.
She promised to change her habit of packing loose items.
She would also keep the ring somewhere safer.
That night, the sky was finally clear.
They each made a wish on the first star.
"I wonder if next year's trip will be just as exciting," Cole said.
In the end, Ivy decided this trip was still her favorite one yet.
Cole's photograph became her favorite picture from the trip.
She kept the little item close to her heart.
She remembered the friends who helped her find it.
It was a small ring that now carried a whole story.
